Namgyal Monastery is a Tibetan Buddhist monastery located in dharamshala. The Namgyal Monastery is one of the largest Tibetan temples and the Dalai Lama’s home. It plays a vital role in preserving Tibetan culture, spirituality, and the traditions of Tibetan Buddhism. The monastery also serves as a center for Buddhist study, meditation, and retreats. The area is lush green and surrounded by snowcapped mountains. Namgyal Monastery was built in 1564 by Gyalwa Sonam Gyatso, the third Dalai Lama. It was renamed Namgyal in 1571.

History

After the Tibetan revolt in 1959 the Namgyal monastery was moved to Mcleod Ganj where it continues to exist even today. The monastery was founded in 1564 by the 3rd Dalai Lama Gyalwa Sonam Gyatso. The monks named the monastery Namgyal to honour the female goddess Namgyalma.
